Consultation and Technical Assistance

The school nursing and health services consultant has the responsibility for providing leadership in the areas of school nursing practice, school health policy, and school health programs. Technical assistance is available on a number of topics including legal issues in school nursing, school health program planning, implementation and evaluation, education programs and related services for children with special health care needs, school health records, medication administration, and emergency services. This position also provides consultation to colleges and universities, professional organizations, and other child-serving health and education-related organizations and groups regarding preservice preparation, continuing professional development for school health personnel, school nursing and comprehensive school health programs.

 

2013 School Nurse Summer Institute

"Get Your School-House in Order" new

In this School Nurse Summer Institute school nurses will be encouraged to get their school-house in order—getting their job descriptions and policies in place for the start of the new school year. The most up-to-date information on delegation and best practice in the school setting will be discussed as well as a sharing of School Nurse job descriptions and evaluations reflecting best practice. The process of school policy-making will be discussed and the afternoon session will allow for hands on learning with school nurses being asked to bring their district’s current policies and protocols for review on: Emergency Nursing Services; Medication Administration—including rules or protocols for administration, emergency medications, field trips, and extended trips; Food Allergies and Asthma; Concussions; and Lice. Evidence-based research will guide what a best practice policy should look like and school nurses will be able to network with others to find what fits best for their district.

New School Nurse Orientation – Survival Skills for the First Year

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses will be providing the “New School Nurse Orientation” on October 9-10, 2013. Nurses new to the profession of school nursing will want to attend this consecutive two-day event. New School Nurses will learn about the role of the school nurse and the many responsibilities that are included in this complex, but rewarding profession.
